Visa / Entry Authorization

Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) / Visa‑Free Entry

  • As of 1 January 2024, Kenya abolished traditional visa requirements for most foreign visitors and introduced an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) system.
  • Under this scheme, nearly all international visitors (for tourism, business, short‑term stays) must apply for the eTA before their journey (unless exempt).
  • The eTA is valid for single entry in most cases.
    • Exception: If after arriving in Kenya you visit only East African Community (EAC) partner states (Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, DR Congo) and return (without transiting other countries), your eTA may remain valid for re‑entry.
    • For U.S. citizens, there is provision for a multiple entry eTA valid up to 5 years.

Who Might Be Exempt / Special Cases

  • Citizens of East African Community (EAC) member states may have simpler entry protocols (or might not require an eTA) under regional integration agreements.
  • Diplomatic passport holders and holders of Kenya permanent residence or valid work permits may be exempt from eTA.

How to Apply: Steps & Timing

  1. Visit the official portal: The Kenyan government’s immigration / eTA portal — e.g. etakenya.go.ke — is the primary place to apply.
  2. Submit required documents, such as:
    • Valid passport (with required validity)
    • Recent passport‑style photo
    • Travel itinerary (flight details)
    • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking, conference invitation, etc.)
    • Contact information
    • Return or onward ticket (and sometimes proof of funds)
  3. Apply in advance: The eTA application should be done at least 72 hours (3 days) prior to departure.
  4. Validity / duration: The eTA is typically valid for up to 90 days from issuance.
  5. Processing fees: A service charge applies. For example, the Kenya eVisa site mentions USD 51 for a single‑entry visa (though in many cases the old visa is being replaced by the eTA).

Passport Validity

  • Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival in Kenya.
  • It should also have at least two blank pages for entry and exit stamps.
