Description

Professor Alan Blake Carles was born in 1932 in Wales United Kingdom.  After leaving Cheltenham College, he joined the Cambridge University, where he graduated with a degree in Natural Sciences Tripos Part II in Physiology in 1954, and Vet. M.B.  in 1957. He became a Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (MRCVS) in 1957 and obtained an MA in 1958. Professor Carles came to Kenya in 1957 and established a specialized herd health private veterinary practice in Molo until 1961 when he joined the Department Animal Husbandry, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Makerere University College, Kenya as a lecturer. Hel lectured in livestock productions systems in the department renamed department of Animal production until 1992 when he retired. He continued to serve the department as a part-time lecturer until 2005. Professor Carles gave himself into building of the faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the University of Nairobi during its formative years. He developed and established the Veterinary Faculty Farm between  1961-1965, Participated actively in the development of the first faculty curriculum and other curricula that followed later (BSc (B.Sc.(Agric.), B.Sc.(Range Management), M.Sc.(Animal Production), and co-ordinated Departmental seminars and teaching of Livestock Production Systems section, until 1993. During his time at the University Professor Carles served Library, Scientific, Examinations, Research committees and in the boards of the Institute of Computer Science, and Board of Post-graduate Studies.
