✈️ Entry, Visa & Immigration

  • Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is required for most international visitors (instead of a traditional visa).

  • Apply online at: https://www.etakenya.go.ke

  • Apply at least 3–7 days before travel.

  • Required documents: passport (6-month validity), passport photo, accommodation proof, return ticket, and invitation letter (if applicable).

  • Some East African countries (EAC) may be exempt.

  • Ensure you carry a printout of your approved eTA and supporting documents.


🌍 Health & Vaccinations

  • Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory if arriving from a country where yellow fever is endemic.

  • COVID‑19 vaccination or testing rules may no longer apply but check current travel advisories before departure.

  • Basic travel health insurance is highly recommended.

  • Credit/debit cards are accepted in hotels and malls; cash is better for local shops and taxis.

  • MPesa, Kenya’s mobile money system, is widely used. You can register with a local SIM card.

  • Local SIM cards (Safaricom, Airtel) are available at the airport and city stores.

  • Internet connectivity is good in urban areas and conference venues.

  • Many hotels and cafes offer free Wi‑Fi.


🚖 Transport & Getting Around

  • Nairobi has a mix of public transport (matatus, buses) and private taxis.

  • Safer options: Uber, Bolt, Little Cab (ride-hailing apps).

  • Airport transfers can be arranged through hotels or via official airport taxis.

  • Avoid travelling late at night alone in unfamiliar areas.

  • Wide range of hotels, serviced apartments, and guesthouses in Nairobi.

  • Areas near the University of Nairobi/Kabete Campus: Westlands, Loresho, Kileleshwa, Gigiri.

  • Book early; October is active for academic events and conferences.
