The research project “Reduction of post- harvest losses and value addition in East African food value chains: Reducing Losses Adding Value (RELOAD) ran from 2013 to 2018. This project was funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and was coordinated by the University of Kassel, Germany. It brought together three German and six African Universities, research institutions and private sector partners: University of Kassel; Konstanz University of Applied Sciences, Germany; Rhine-Waal University for Applied Sciences, Germany; University of Nairobi; Egerton University, Kenya; Mbarara University for Science and Technology, Uganda; Makerere University, Uganda; Ambo University, Ethiopia; Jimma University, Ethiopia; DITSL GmbH, Germany;  ICIPE; National Museum of Kenya; NARO, Uganda; Bahati Slaughterhouse Ltd., Kenya; Horticultural Exporters Association (Hortexa), Uganda; Baltimas, Ethiopia; Jimma Women’s Self Help Soymilk Processing Factory, Ethiopia

Abstract

The research project had seven sub-projects: Assessment and economy; Assessment and Technology; Dairy value chain; Fruits and vegetables value chain; Staple food value chain; Meat value chain; and Social Science. The University of Nairobi was involved in the meat value chain sub-project whose aim was to improve meat processing, product development and marketing.    The potential of innovative animal production and marketing systems for reducing losses and increasing value of meat products was also tested and assessed.
